Biography

Thurman E. Blalock, 99, of Hillsboro passed away Friday, June 1, 2012, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Dr. Roger Duck officiating. Visitation with the family will be after the funeral service. Interment will follow on Monday at Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park.

Thurman was born September 3, 1912 in Sulphur Springs to the late Oscar Bradley and Ora Mae (Lee) Blalock. As a child, he moved with his family to Vernon and grew up there and in Oklaunion. On April 12, 1934 he married Helen Ferguson in Walters, OK. Following their marriage, he went to work for Humble Oil & Refining which later became Exxon Mobil. After more than 42 years, Thurman retired from Exxon Mobil as a Field Superintendent in 1976. Helen preceded him in death on July 10, 1993. He later married Dorothy Shaw and she preceded him in death in November 1998. He was a member of Lockett Baptist Church in Lockett and a member of the Masonic Lodge #655 in Vernon for 67 years.

Also preceding him in death were his brother, Homer J. Blalock and two sisters, Jewell Beaird and Naomi Fowler.

Survivors include two children, Gypsy Gardner and husband, Joe, of Hillsboro and Sammy E. Blalock and wife, Mona, of Houston; five grandchildren, Deborah Sockwell and husband, Lyn, of Midland, Dawn Truesdell and husband, Randy, of Lubbock, Danna Pohler and husband, Steve, of The Woodlands, Dara Poole of Hillsboro, and Steve Blalock and wife, Aimee, of Austin; eleven great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
