Carolyn Ann Baker-Vaughn, age 72, departed this life on March 22, 2026, and was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Carolyn was born June 15, 1953, -- the first of 11 children born to Maurine (Gipson) Baker and Vernon Baker Jr., of Hillsboro, Texas. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1971, with high honors. She continued her education at Hill College in Hillsboro, and Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1977.
Carolyn enjoyed her career in education for more than 30 years at Travis Elementary School and Hillsboro Elementary School. She approached her work with patience, compassion, and the will to shape young minds.
One of her greatest joys in life was her daughter, Latrecia Jeanette Watson of Mansfield, Texas, born on January 2, 1974. Latrecia and Carolyn shared an everlasting mother-daughter bond that kept them on the phone for hours or often finishing each other's sentences.
After retiring from teaching in 2008, she loved spending time with family, shopping on the weekends and watching great movies on Lifetime. Additionally, some of her favorite shows were Family Feud, The Golden Girls, Dancing with the Stars and American Idol.
Carolyn was a true and faithful servant of the Lord and her strong faith and belief in the power of prayer was an integral part of her life. She served as First Lady in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church for more than 20 years, and she was a proud member of Wade Chapel AME Church in Hillsboro for many years.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Maurine and Vernon; her brother Vernon Baker III; and two sisters, Versie Jean Baker - Johnson and Brenda Jo Wilson. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughter, Latrecia, an elementary school teacher in Arlington, Texas, for more than 25 years, and her devoted son-in-law Patrick Watson, Senior Master Sgt. in the US Air Force based in Fort Worth, Texas.
Carolyn also leaves seven siblings, Margie Baker, Steve Baker, Larry Baker, Tony Baker and wife Christine, Norman Baker and wife Marilyn, Norma Baker, Cynthia Baker; and many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews, including Chase Baker, and dear friends, including Kendra Williams.
Carolyn will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, generosity and sweet spirit. She was the heart of her family and the matriarch everyone turned to for guidance, comfort, and unconditional love. Her presence brought the family together, and her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched.
