Donald Gay Cockrell

Donald Gay Cockrell, of Laguna Park, Texas, went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2026. He was surrounded by loved ones.

Born on June 25, 1940, in Hillsboro, Texas, he was the beloved son of Thomas Brooks and Christine (Church) Cockrell. Don grew up in one of the pioneering families that helped establish Hill County. He attended Hillsboro High School, where he played on the football team and earned the nickname “The Boy with the Golden Toe” for his many game-winning field goals for the Eagles. He went on to the University of Texas but transferred to TCU to be closer to Cindy Whigham, whom he married. Together, they had two beloved sons. Don graduated with a degree in Psychology but soon discovered a passion for business.

Don began his career as a bank auditor, advanced into banking, and became the youngest bank president in Texas when he accepted a position in Memphis, Texas. There, he became a cattle rancher, land trader, real estate broker, and owner of an abstract company. He later succeeded as a banker, insurance broker, and real estate broker in Central Texas. Don was known as a kind and fair businessman. Don loved fishing, hunting, genealogy, playing in his garden, and most of all, spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cindy Cockrell.

Don is survived by his sons, Craig Cockrell and his wife, Tammy, of Comanche, Clay Cockrell and his wife, Mendy, of Marble Falls, and his very special friend, Pat Ferris. He is also survived by six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous extended family members.

A graveside service to honor Donald’s memory will be held on May 27, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Ridge Park Cemetery, located on Julatka Street in Hillsboro, Texas. The service will conclude at 11:00 a.m., providing family, friends, and all who knew him an opportunity to reflect and pay their respects in a serene and dignified setting.

Donald Gay Cockrell’s legacy will remain in the hearts of those who knew him, a lasting reminder of a life lived with quiet dignity and sincere devotion. His memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his name be made to Sunset Hospice in Clifton. Their loving care for him over an extended time was deeply meaningful to us all.
