Edith Lane (Bennett) Brooks of Woodbury passed away peacefully Monday, November 1, 2021, at the Wesley House Assisted Living Facility in Hillsboro. She turned 90 years old on October 5, 2021. Edith will be buried Friday, November 5, 2021, in the Woodbury Cemetery beside her husband.
She was born October 5, 1931, to Dave and Armenia (Biggs) Bennett in the Bethel Community. Edith attended school in Bethel and finished high school in Hillsboro. In August 1948, Edith married John Findley (Wimpy) Brooks. They were married fifty-three years before his death. One of her first jobs was working for Woods Manufacturing Company. Later, she attended Beauty School and became a beautician working for her aunt Lou Ella in Hillsboro for several years. In 1962, her father-in-law, Elvie Brooks, passed away, and Edith took over the family’s general store with a new baby daughter and ran it for many years. After running the family business, Edith became a full-time rural mail carrier and held that position for over twenty years. She was a faithful member of the Woodbury Baptist Church and before her passing was the longest standing member. Edith was on multiple committees of the church such as pastor search committee, nominating committee, of which she was chairperson, and any other committee that needed something done. She was very kind and thoughtful, sending cards, visiting people in hospitals and nursing homes, and helping people in the community with whatever they needed. Edith was a founding member of the Woodbury Cemetery Association and served as secretary/treasurer for the Woodbury Community Center for many years. Edith and Wimpy were members of the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department for many years and she continued to support it after his passing. She was a hard worker with a pleasant smile who never asked for anything.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Dave Bennett and Armenia (Biggs) Waits; her husband, John Findley (Wimpy) Brooks; and her son-in-law, Ron Wood. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Wood of Woodbury and Jeana Brooks of Aledo; her brother, Gene Paul Waits of DeSoto; her grandson Chase Hill and wife Sheri of Keller; her great-grandchildren, Finley, Ava, Brooks, and Harper Hill of Keller; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Woodbury Baptist Church, 1805 HCR 1305, Hillsboro, Texas 76645; Woodbury Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 1527, Hillsboro, Texas 76645; or Woodbury Community Center Association, 548 HCR 1314, Whitney, Texas 76692.
