Gary Johansen

Gary Lee Johansen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, and friend, passed away on June 4, 2026 at the age of 76.

Born on June 30, 1949, in Minden, Nebraska, he began his life on a farm in Nebraska, where he learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and dedication that would guide him throughout his life. Those values shaped a man whose impact reached far beyond his family and community.

After leaving the farm, he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Speech and a Master's degree in Criminology. He went on to answer a calling to serve others as a police officer, dedicating himself to protecting and helping those around him. His commitment to service continued when he joined the United States Army, where he proudly served his country for 35 years and retired as a CW4. Through decades of military service, he demonstrated honor, courage, leadership, and unwavering devotion to the nation he loved. After leaving the Army, he continued to serve others as a criminal investigator and college professor, teaching others about his passion for criminology. He finally retired to his dream home in the beautiful countryside of Whitney, Texas.

While his professional accomplishments were many, his greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband and a loving father, teaching his daughters through his example the importance of integrity, strength, compassion, and perseverance. His guidance, wisdom, and steady presence shaped generations.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will continue through those who knew him. He is preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Johansen. He is survived by his wife, Georgiana Johansen; his mother, Dorothy Johansen; his four siblings (Larry, Leonard, Maynard, and Lynda); his three daughters (Geannie, Angela, and Michelle); eight grandchildren (Ryan, Robert, Clint, Gary, Dylan, Dakota, Bentley, and Bayleigh); and four great-grandchildren (Marina, Reven, Jack, and Liliana). He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, fellow service members, and all whose lives he touched.

Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived—a life defined by duty, sacrifice, love, and faithfulness to family and country. His memory will remain forever in our hearts, and his legacy will continue through the many lives he influenced.

A service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 2:00 pm at White Bluff Chapel, 1072 White Bluff Drive, Whitney, Texas. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney. Burial services will be held June 30, 2026 at 1:30 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
