John Alfred Metcalf, of Hillsboro, earned his wings on April 29, 2025, at home with his family by his side. He was born May 14, 1946, in Greeneville, Tennessee to Andrew and Barbara Metcalf.
He was a proud Marine who served his country in Vietnam. John came home from the war wounded, but still went to college, received his nursing degree, and loved his work, especially in critical care. The Veterans Administration decided when he turned fifty, he needed to retire due to his injuries from Vietnam, but he never forgot his time in nursing, and he missed it.
John was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ and loved having coffee with the men on Thursday mornings, which made his week complete.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Barbara Metcalf; his brothers, Gordon Gray, Buddy Gray, Phillip Gray, Andy Metcalf and Joe Metcalf; and his sisters, Peggy Palmer and Judy Johnston.
He is survived by his wife, Cora; his daughter, Melinda Maiden, of Johnson City, Tennessee; his brother, Doug Gray and his wife, Belinda of Greeneville, Tennessee; his sister Marjorie Darnell of Greeneville, Tennessee; and his stepson, Jarred Schuman, of Hillsboro, Texas. John also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
