Richard Allen Fields was born on October 9, 1940, in Alton, Illinois, to Lafayette and Louise (Brake) Fields. With deep sorrow and enduring respect, his family shares the news of his passing on July 9, 2026.
Throughout his life, Richard touched the hearts of many with his steadfast dedication to those around him, commitment to family, and an unwavering presence in the lives of loved ones. His journey began in Alton, where he made lasting memories with his parents, Lafayette and Louise, who preceded him in death.
Richard began his distinguished service to his country in the United States Air Force. The values and discipline instilled during his time in the military would serve as the foundation for his subsequent achievements and steadfast character.
Following his honorable service in the Air Force, Richard embarked on an exceptional forty-year career with American Airlines. Throughout these decades, he remained a pillar within the organization, admired for his unwavering commitment to excellence. Richard’s profound expertise in aviation was matched only by his desire to help others succeed. He not only served as a pilot instructor but also wrote the very training program and administered instruction to helicopter pilots prior to the Vietnam War. In doing so, he played a vital role in preparing countless pilots for the many challenges that lay ahead, leaving an indelible mark on the flight training community.
Richard enjoyed building and restoring PT 22 – Ryan aircraft. To date, he had almost completed 3 restorations and also restored a Baby Lakes plane. He also had a keen interest in Ercoupe airplanes. He actively rebuilt and restored airplanes until the end of June 2025. Paralysis from a stroke prevented him from continuing his lifelong dedication to aviation hobbies
Richard’s devotion to his family remained the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Fields. He also leaves behind his son, Drexel Q. West and wife Wanda, who will forever carry his memory forward. Cherished by his grandchildren, Richard found great joy in the presence of Heather Sisson, Chase West and wife Julie Ann, Jo Jo, and Jamie, as well as Heather’s husband, Brandon, whose companionship enriched family gatherings through the years. He is also survived by Heather and Brandon's children Avery Sission and Felicity Bailey
Richard Allen Fields’ legacy endures in the hearts of all who knew him, bound together by memories of his generous spirit, strength, and profound love. As friends and relatives
