Robert Irving Short, Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at the age of 79, surrounded by the warm embrace of his loving family. Born on November 25, 1946, Robert’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and the enduring beauty found in family and nature.
From 1964 to 1968, Robert proudly served in the United States Air Force, a testament to his commitment to his country during a pivotal time in history. His four years of honorable service were foundational to a life characterized by quiet strength and profound gratitude.
Following his military service, Robert built a life centered around his beloved family and the outdoors he so deeply appreciated. His passion for fishing took him to the rivers of Montana, where he forged lasting memories amid the rugged, serene countryside. During his years in Texas, he sought out lakes at every opportunity, reveling in the freedom and tranquility offered by sailboats and open waters. Beyond his love for water, Robert found joy in horseback riding and the timeless charm of horse-drawn wagons. He generously imparted this passion to not only his grandchildren but also his great-nieces, fostering an enduring connection to the art and affection of horse care.
The heart of Robert’s life was his devoted wife, Dianne Lynn Short (Collins), with whom he shared countless treasured moments. His children, son David Charles Short and daughter-in-law Tina Marie Short (Johnson), stood beside him as pillars of support and love. Robert experienced profound joy watching his grandchildren—Amanda Marie Cagle (Short) and David Cody Eugene Short—grow and flourish. He also delighted in the presence of his grandson-in-law, Dustin Lewis Cagle, and his great-grandchildren: Gracie May Short, Brayton Lewis Cagle, Gunner Jay Cagle, Hunter Clive Cagle, and Liam Nathaniel Sharp. His family extended further to include his sister, Bonita “Bonnie” Hilton, nieces Heather Hilton, Holly Hilton, and Beth Hilton, and great-nieces and nephew Victoria Kerstine, Savannah Kerstine, Whitney Kerstine, Tristan Bavol, Delaney Garrett, Marley Garrett, and Lauren Northrop.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Short; his father, Robert Irving Short Sr.; and his son, Carl Irving Short.
A man who embraced both life and family with humility and steadfast devotion, Robert Irving Short, Jr. leaves behind a legacy defined by love, service, and a profound appreciation for the natural world.
