Roy Nell McCown

Roy Nell (Hammonds) McCown passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, 2 weeks shy of her 89th birthday. Roy Nell was born December 8, 1936, at home in Floydada, Texas, to her parents, C.T. and Ila Hammonds. She attended Texas Tech University, where she met the love of her life, Tom McCown. After being married, Roy Nell and Tom moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Roy Nell received a BS in Education from TCU. They were married for 65 years until Tom’s passing in 2023. During their marriage, they lived in Texas, Tennessee, California, and Virginia as she followed Tom’s career. She raised two sets of twins and one grandson. She also served others and was a Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Den Mom, Home Room Mom, Church volunteer, and volunteered at the Long Beach Rescue Mission. She supported her kids by cheerfully sitting through many piano, dance recitals, baseball, football, and soccer games, as well as cheerleading events. Roy Nell was a prolific knitter, crocheter, and quilter, and loved crafting.

She is survived by her brother Michael Dwayne Hammonds of Round Rock, Texas; her 4 children, Abby Michelle Gherman of Laguna Woods, California, David Michael McCown of Arlington Texas, Jack McCown of Huntington Beach, California, and Jon McCown of Whitney, Texas; as well as 3 grandchildren, Renee Gherman, Ryan Gherman and Josiah McCown; and one great grandchild, Celeste Claiborne.

Roy Nell was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and will be missed.
