Versie Jean (Baker) Johnson, 67, of Hillsboro, departed this life on February 8, 2023, and was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Celebration of Life will take place at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro, Texas, with Reverend Sharon D. Rich, Pastor of Wade Chapel AME Church, officiating. The viewing will take place from 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. and visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Friday, February 17, 2023, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Versie was born on July 9, 1955, to Vernon Baker Jr., and Maurine (Gipson) Baker in Hillsboro, Texas. She was born along with her twin brother Vernon Baker III, who preceded her in death in 2008.

Versie graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1974. She continued her education at Hill College in Hillsboro, where she earned her certification in cosmetology, and she maintained her cosmetology license for more than twenty-five years.

Versie also attended Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas, where she majored in elementary education. She enjoyed a career of more than thirty years in education and served as a paraprofessional in the Texas school districts of Hillsboro, Rockport, Corsicana and La Marque.

Versie was blessed with one son Jonathan Roy Johnson, on May 6, 1987. She retired in 2010 and returned to live in Hillsboro full time. Versie was well known for her bright smile, energetic personality, and her sharp sense of humor, which she never lost.

She enjoyed spending time with family, cooking, baking, shopping, watching old Western movies, and reading and writing. She also loved poetry and had one of her original poems published. Versie was a true and faithful servant of the Lord and her strong faith and belief in the power of prayer was an important part of her life. As a child, she attended Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ in Hillsboro with her family. She was also a member of Wade Chapel AME Church in Hillsboro for more than twenty years.

Versie was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother Vernon, and her beloved sister Brenda Jo Wilson. She leaves to cherish her memory; her son, Jonathan; her three grandchildren Kaniyah, Jayveon, and Jaden; eight siblings, Carolyn Vaughn, Margie Baker, Steve Baker, Larry Baker, Tony Baker and wife Christine, Norman Baker and wife Marilyn, Norma Baker, Cynthia Baker; and cherished niece Latrecia Watson, along with many more aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. She was a proud mother, wife, sister, aunt and dear friend who will be profoundly missed.
