Alice Horne Obituary

Alice A. Horne, age 85, passed away at Providence Hospital in Waco, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Peoria Cemetery.

Alice was born in Madison, CT on May 4, 1937, but her life did not truly begin until she met the love of her life, Levi Horne, in the fall of 1967. Alice and Levi were married on December 22, 1967 and were together for 42 years when Levi passed away. After they were married, they traveled the country for Levi's job as an ironworker for building towers. When health issues sidelined Levi, they settled in Peoria, outside of Hillsboro, to enjoy the country life and raise their children.

Alice had many roles in her life, but the ones she cherished most were wife and mother. She taught herself to cook, sew and crochet and taught many friends and family members to do the same. She and Levi spent many hours gardening together and Alice taught herself to can vegetables for use all year long. Their most sought-after gardening treasure was their tomatoes, which sometimes weighed up to a pound each. Alice's other love was mowing. She would spend hours behind the push mower to make their yard and acreage look beautiful until she graduated to a riding lawn mower, making the task easier. In her later years, she had to give up that job to her daughter and son-in-law but would occasionally supervise and give tips. Alice was a hairdresser for a time, worked in retail and waitressed until she fully retired in 2009 to take care of Levi until he passed in December of that year. She then helped take care of her grandson, Cason, and taught him to love the country life as much as she did. They spent many hours on the porch swing reading and telling made-up stories to each other as well as playing what Cason called "Nanny and Cason" games, and no one else was allowed to join in. Alice will be missed by all who knew and loved her as she treated everyone with love and respect.

Alice was preceded in death by her loving husband, Levi Horne; daughter, Kathy Vincent; son, Syd Horne; her sister and brother-in-law, Rose and John Zadrozny; and brother, Howard Hathaway.

She leaves behind her cherished children, Scott Horne and wife Amy of China Spring, Lisa Green and husband Brian of Hillsboro, Robert Vincent and wife Diane of Wallingford, CT, Carolyn Meaden and husband Dave, Sherry Geurts and husband Mike all of Marshall, MN and Keela Mercer of Sioux Falls, SD; her sisters, Brenda Thayer and husband John of Clinton, CT, Wanda Hathaway of Old Saybrook, CT, Linda Stray of Westbrook, CT, and sister-in-law, Karen Hathaway of Clinton, CT; grandchildren, Shay Patterson and husband Patrick, Cole, Jessie and Josie Horne, Cason Green, John Otto and wife Jessi, Austin Demuth and wife Brydie, Carlee Kling, Travis Orvis, Jesse Orvis and wife Traci, Brady Orvis and fiancée Lisa, Danny Mercer and wife Ali, Amanda Kesteloot and fiancé Jeff, and Tanner Horne and wife Meganne. She also leaves behind five great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her best friend, Ruth Lehmann. Alice adored her pets; Mollie, Sally, Breezee, Elijah, Binx and Ren. They will miss her dearly.
