Dennis Walter Sonnenburg, 93, of Hillsboro passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at his residence. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with Rev. Brad Slaten officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.
Dennis was born February 10, 1928, in Malone, Texas, to Albert and Frieda (Radke) Sonnenburg. On May 24, 1928, he was baptized at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Walling, Texas, and confirmed there at the age of 14. Dennis served his country in the United States Army during World War II. For 30 years, he was employed by the postal service. He farmed and ranched most of his life in Hill County. Since 1960, he was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, L. D., Vernon, and Ellan Sonnenburg; and sisters, Ruby Striepe, Adeline Schulz, and Nelda Hoover.
Survivors include his son, Jay Sonnenburg and wife, Margaret, of San Antonio; two daughters, Janet Sonnenburg of Mesquite and Brenda Tekell of Logan, Utah; six grandchildren, Jonah Sonnenburg, Jillian Sonnenburg, Emma Kate Sonnenburg, Chance Tekell, Haley McLaughlin, and Kaylin Tekell; one great-grandchild, Logan McLaughlin; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and a special friend, Brenda Trompler.
