J. Baughman Obituary

J. Pat Baughman, 78, of Morgan, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2021, at Ascension Providence Hospital in Waco. There will be a private family service under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors at the Kopperl Cemetery in Kopperl, Texas at a later date. A memorial celebration of J. Pat’s life will be held in the spring.

He was born August 11, 1942, in Meridian, Mississippi to John Paul Baughman and Sarah Mildred Dorough Baughman.

Pat graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Advertising, and also studied at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. At Texas State University in San Marcos, he was a lecturer in the School of Communications where he taught media and advertising. Pat as an undergraduate worked for Gov. John Connally, then taught school in Texas, Georgia and Florida, and contributed to President Lyndon Johnson's study of the "War on Poverty." He became a land developer in Williamson and Sabine Counties in Texas and in Lawrence County, Tennessee. As another sideline, Pat was best known as the writer and producer of acclaimed albums of western Swing Music with Don Walser in Austin and Southern Heritage Music in Nashville, Tennessee. He has received treasured recognition for the Heritage music from the descendants of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. Pat was a Life Member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans having five Confederate soldiers in his ancestry. Earlier in 2020 he formed the Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest Camp #2313, SCV serving Bosque and Hill Counties and was the Camp Commander. In his absence the camp will continue to meet at 6:30 pm the second Thursday of the month. .

He was preceded in death by his mother Mildred Baughman, father Paul Baughman, and brother, Steve Baughman.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Carolyn Owens Baughman of Morgan; daughter, Paula Jean Bums and son-in-law, Galy Bums of Blum, granddaughter Lindsey Lyons and husband John Lyons of Aubrey; grandson Brandon Bums and wife, Shana Bums of Round Rock; great-grandson, Ledger Ellis Lyons and great-granddaughter, Lennon Millie Lyons of Aubrey.
