Martha Jean Carter Hightower, age 96 of Hillsboro passed away Friday, January 9, 2021. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Paul Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory in Hillsboro. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at the funeral home. Facial masks and social distancing are required.
Martha was born February 1, 1924 in Dawson, TX. TO Marion Oliver and Ada White Carter. She grew up in the Texas Baptist Home for Children in Waxahachie, TX. Martha attended and graduated from Waxahachie High School. Martha married Alton Hightower of Hillsboro June 2, 1944, Martha and Alton were happily married for over 70 years and Alton proceeded Martha in death March 20, 2015.
Martha was a loving faithful member of Walnut Street Baptist Church. She and Alton loved to travel, they were collectors of arrowheads and loved using metal detector to find treasures. Martha was very musically talented. She played the piano by ear and sang in various groups.
Martha and Alton were not blessed with children of their own, but they claimed and loved the children of their closest friends Charles and Becky Tekell of Itasca.
Martha is survived by family: niece, Barbara Hightower Miller of Houston, TX; nephew, Richard Beene and wife Mercedes of Georgetown, TX; great niece, Penny Dyer and husband Jason of Mississippi; niece, Carol Ann Rothenflue and husband Jack of Kerrville; Margaret and Irby Cox of Grand Prairie, TX; adopted Children; God daughter- Kathi Rogers, and Sandra Brackin, Kenneth Tekell, Scott Tekell, Tim Tekell and David Wayne Brackin.
